They are excellent for very hot soups/food.
I used them to make soup for a big party. The lack of fused walls and rims made bowls easier to carry when the contents were hot. I went to another party that served soup and brought them in so they didn't have to do as much washing up. They also bought "soup bowls" BUT their bowls were made of lightweight styrofoam which was too hot and we had a feeling their bowls were about to melt. It is great! It was also reasonable compared to other prices.
