Review on High-Quality DELTA RP46074 Tub Shower Cartridge - Durable, White Finish by David Cronin

Revainrating 4 out of 5

If you continue to drip after replacing it, it may not be the cartridge.

Delta Monitor 13/14 Faucet was leaking about 1 drop per second out of my tub. It uses about 1-2 gallons per day (which I collected and used to refill the toilet bowl after flushing). I ordered this part and carefully identified it by the "Type P" marking on the original cartridge. The replacement was easy and I followed the instructions exactly. Turned on the water supply and lo and behold, it's still dripping. Now, of course, it was only a drip every 10-15 seconds, but it was still dripping. I couldn't imagine a new part doing this unless it was very old stock and the seals had hardened or deformed during storage. I checked after an hour and the dripping has slowed down significantly, but still a drip every 2-3 minutes. So on a whim I called the water company and asked them to check my pressure. They came out and lo and behold, the pressure in my house was a whopping 125psi, about 50psi too much. So I disassembled the original cartridge and inspected the seats very closely. I see a bulge on the seats where the 125 psi pressure pushed the seats against the control disc so hard that a small area of the seals actually pushed slightly into the holes, creating the bulge. When the handle was then rotated, it cut at these bulges, creating an uneven surface that allowed dripping. Moral of the story: if you've replaced a cartridge and it's dripping, check your water pressure.
