You set the mode by pressing a button - time, heart rate, stopwatch, etc. mode. The watch will display this mode until you press the button and switch to another mode. While running, I start the stopwatch and heart rate monitor, then switch to HRM mode and check my heart rate. When I want to check my time, press the mode button a few times and that's it.
