The instructions are not step by step but just a diagram where each part is labeled with a letter then follow in alphabetical order. just a step that required some hand strength but I could do it myself. No screws required, all parts snap together. However, you may need screws if you plug it into the wall. I am a size 7 and my boyfriend is a size 12, 3 pairs of his shoes do not fit in a row but mine fit. So if you're a smaller shoe size, you can fill the entire shelf, but if you're a larger men's size, you'll only fill the two outermost rows. I fought it by putting his shoes next to mine to fill in. Not suitable for tall or work boots. Suitable for Chelsea boots, tennis shoes, sandals, dress shoes and more. As an all metal shelf (save for a few small parts) it's a really big payoff and I would buy it again, especially if we get more shoes. I put it in our office but I'm sure it fits perfectly in the closet, the door closes very easily and doesn't get in the way.
