We bought this for our main living area. Although the side shelf is primarily used for books, the side shelf "outside" the steel supports is a great place for a small flower pot or dust display. I recommend not tightening to final torque until complete. A little "giving in" during assembly has often saved the day. I found the label stickers a little confusing at first - most parts of the shelves and side panels had multiple labels. It turns out that extra features are needed to ensure the right parts are put together in the right place, which is very helpful for those who don't read the instructions. (Though I know) One caveat - Amazon's description doesn't mention that the finish is smudge sensitive, the manual says something. We haven't had any issues so far, but we haven't put anything on it to test yet. If you want to use it as a plant stand, you might want to think about how to protect the shelf. Overall, we like this block so much that we're considering a second option for our break room.
