Bought to prepare for some out of town photo trips. I stayed away from ball heads, including the very expensive Novoflex model, because they just can't hold the advertised weight without slipping no matter how hard I twist the knobs to keep the ball in place. This Manfrotto model holds up its advertised weight well; Adjustments are easy; and multiple bubble levels are great for leveling a camera, including a full-frame DSLR with a telephoto lens, in almost any position. I'm not recording video at the moment, so panning issues don't bother me. My only gripe - and this is probably just a personal matter - is that I have a different tripod head with a different quick release plate, and unless I buy a replacement QR plate I have to remove and reattach it every time I need one install another camera. Yes, I know I could be more selective with my purchases and only buy tripod heads with the same QR plate, but that pretty much limits me to certain brands and models.
