## What is BlueWallet

BlueWallet is a free, open-source, Bitcoin-only self-custody wallet for iOS and Android, with a macOS desktop app and a watch-only Chrome extension. It is built by a collective of developers and designers and has been developed in public on GitHub since January 2018.

## Who holds the keys

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Key control | Self-custodial: private keys are generated and stored on the user's phone; BlueWallet has no access to them. |
| Seed phrase | Backup is usually a 12- or 24-word recovery phrase; an optional BIP39 passphrase is supported. |
| Recovery | BlueWallet cannot recover a lost private key; recovery relies on the user's own backup. |
| Account model | Multiple wallet types: single-key Bitcoin wallets, watch-only wallets, multisig vaults and Lightning wallets connected to the user's own node. |

## Features and supported networks

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Platforms | iOS and Android; macOS desktop; Android APK on GitHub; no official Windows or Linux build. |
| Supported networks | Bitcoin only, including Lightning through LNDhub on the user's own node. |
| Multisig | Multisig vaults, 2 of 3 by default. |
| Hardware wallet support | Works with PSBT-compatible hardware wallets such as Coldcard, Passport, Jade and Keystone. |
| Coin control | View, label, freeze or select individual coins (UTXOs); RBF and CPFP fee bumping; batching. |
| Privacy (CoinJoin, Tor) | Payjoin, BIP47 payment codes, plausible-deniability decoy storage and connection to the user's own Electrum server. |
| Platforms | Watch-only Chrome extension (BlueWallet Portfolio) that cannot spend funds. |

## Security and audits

- Open source under the MIT licence; the code is public on GitHub.
- Optional app password encrypts wallet storage on top of phone encryption; a separate decoy storage (plausible deniability) can be opened with a different password.
- The vendor publishes a threat-model guide mapping each setup (passphrase, hardware signing, offline phone signer, multisig vault) to the attacks it addresses.

## Fees

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Wallet | Free, open-source app; Bitcoin network fees are set by the user. |
| Wallet | Network fees can be raised or the payment cancelled with RBF and CPFP. |

## History

| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 2017 | Project started after the 2017 Bitcoin fork disputes, aiming at a Bitcoin-only wallet with SegWit and fee control. |
| 14 January 2018 | Public GitHub repository created. |
| 1 September 2026 | Watch-only Chrome extension BlueWallet Portfolio released. |
| 6 October 2026 | Version 8.0.2 published on GitHub. |

## Risks and caveats

- Losing the private key or recovery phrase without a backup means losing access to the funds; the vendor cannot recover it.
- Anyone who obtains the recovery words can access the funds.
- The vendor describes Lightning as experimental and advises keeping amounts small.
- Official builds should be obtained only from the vendor's download page, the app stores and the BlueWallet GitHub.

## About the developer

## How voting works

Votes are anonymous and carry no text. Each device has one vote per item; press the same button again to remove it. Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a person is voting. We keep a random device ID in a cookie and a salted hash of the IP address to limit abuse — no names, no accounts. Votes are visitors’ opinions, not investment advice.
