## What is Wasabi Wallet

Wasabi Wallet is a free, open-source, non-custodial Bitcoin wallet for desktop (Windows, macOS and Linux), focused on privacy. It routes all traffic over Tor and supports WabiSabi multi-party (coinjoin) transactions through third-party coordinators. Version 1.0 was released in 2018; zkSNACKs, the original coordinator, shut down its service on 1 June 2024.

## Who holds the keys

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Key control | Self-custodial: the user keeps full control of the private keys. |
| Seed phrase | 12 recovery words (or several 20-word sets with Multi-share Backup), plus a passphrase. |
| Recovery | The passphrase acts as a BIP 39 13th word and also encrypts the private key, so recovery needs both the words and the passphrase. |

## Features and supported networks

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Supported networks | Bitcoin only. |
| Platforms | Desktop only: Windows, macOS (Intel and Apple silicon) and Linux; no mobile app. |
| Privacy (CoinJoin, Tor) | All traffic goes over Tor; WabiSabi coinjoin needs a third-party coordinator chosen by the user; private sync uses compact block filters. |
| Hardware wallet support | Hardware wallets via HWI, e.g. Trezor, Coldcard, Ledger, Blockstream Jade and BitBox02; coinjoin is not possible from a hardware wallet. |
| Coin control | Manual coin selection, labels and privacy suggestions when paying. |
| Silent Payments | Can send to Silent Payment addresses; receiving to them is not yet supported. |

## Security and audits

- Open source: all code, including the coordinator, is released under the MIT licence.
- Coinjoin follows a zero-trust design in which the coordinator cannot steal funds or link inputs to outputs.
- Releases come with signature files for verification.

## Fees

| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Wallet | Free to use. |
| Swaps | Coinjoin: since version 2.2.0.0 the client pays only mining fees for its own blockspace; leftover change of up to 10,000 sats may go to the coordinator. |

## History

| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| December 2015 | Ádám Ficsor and others begin work on HiddenWallet, the predecessor of Wasabi. |
| 1 August 2018 | Wasabi 1.0 beta released. |
| 31 October 2018 | Wasabi 1.0 released. |
| 15 June 2022 | Wasabi 2.0 released with WabiSabi coinjoin. |
| 1 June 2024 | The zkSNACKs coordinator shuts down; coinjoin now relies on third-party coordinators. |

## Risks and caveats

- Coinjoin depends on a third-party coordinator chosen by the user; since 1 June 2024 there is no default zkSNACKs coordinator.
- A malicious coordinator could run small rounds or try to increase forfeited leftovers, giving users little privacy gain.
- Coinjoin requires hot keys on the computer; it cannot be done from a hardware wallet.
- Recovery needs both the recovery words and the passphrase.

## About the developer

- **Developer**: The Wasabi Wallet Developers (open-source project); originally led by Ádám Ficsor.

Votes are anonymous and carry no text. Each device has one vote per item; press the same button again to remove it. Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a person is voting. We keep a random device ID in a cookie and a salted hash of the IP address to limit abuse — no names, no accounts. Votes are visitors’ opinions, not investment advice.
