Review on ASUS VG34VQL1B Adjustable DisplayHDR DisplayPort, 165Hz Refresh Rate, Flicker-Free, Tilt, Height, and Swivel Adjustments by Lance Venable

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Outstanding widescreen VA panel

For a 24-inch 60Hz IPS display, that's a big step forward. The unit I received has very even lighting and no dead pixels. I can't see any ghosting no matter what settings I use, what game I load. I had flickering with free sync enabled so I turned it off but I was using old display drivers. Since then I've updated and re-enabled the drivers and no flickering has been observed since then (we'll see). product AMD). Aside from minor issues with the free sync, all the disadvantages I can attribute to this display are mainly due to the slightly different nature of the image and colors resulting from a VA panel compared to IPS.I personally use this screen in a dark room and i'm more sensitive to bright light than most people, so the high brightness and backlight bleeding of IPS panels bother me much more than any quirks of VA panels (which again are minimal here) . Ultimately, it is a matter of taste as far as differences in display technology are concerned. I also hated the physical style of all the "game screens" that look like they were designed by kids. The style of this monitor is VERY muted and you wouldn't realize it's being sold as a gaming display just by looking at it. That was important to me. I bought it along with the Gigabyte W34WQC (curved VA version) and the LG 34WP65C, both of which are cheaper, but the reviews seem to indicate that these panels have more quality control and picture quality issues than this Asus. .Once IPS and/or OLED local dimming becomes more ubiquitous I may be able to update them. However, this is very price dependent and I don't think immature implementations of these technologies are currently worth the price premium (double the cost). There is nothing wrong with old technology as long as the implementation is of high quality, as is the case with this display. This is a good quality widescreen VA display at a great price. If that's what you're looking for, this should be an easy fix. . I rate it a 4/5 purely for the speakers and loose sync issues.
