Description of ๐ŸŒ Nooelec Weather Satellite RTL-SDR Bundle - NESDR SMArTee XTR Included for Receiving LRIT, HRIT & HRPT Satellite Weather Images from Space!

This bundle will allow you to receive detailed, high-resolution, near real-time images from orbiting weather satellites. With as little as an hour of setup, you will be receiving LRIT, HRIT and HRPT GOES transmissions, error-free and with ease!. This GOES Weather Satellite SDR bundle includes a GOES parabolic reflector antenna, NESDR SMArTee XTR SDR receiver, SAWbird+ GOES LNA module, 10m LMR400 cable, and the other cables and adapters required for a full GOES receiver. Just add a host device and software, and you are ready to go. The 21dBi antenna is meant for high gain L-band applications where the antenna is stationary. The center frequency is 1.75GHz, and bandwidth is 200MHz or greater. This encompasses many popular weather satellite applications and constellations. Software is required for the decoding of images. Current options are either free Linux-based decoders or a paid version of XRIT Decoder for Windows (a license is NOT included in this bundle!). A virtual machine can be used for Linux instead of a standalone Linux computer or Raspberry Pi, if preferred.

Works GREAT!: Computer components

Incredibly good! I'm based near Los Angeles and running the free gorecv and goproc from Peter Nordhuis' gostools. I'm getting about 100 Witterbees from GOES-17 on average, well below the recommended 400 or less needed for reliable reception. The pictures are just amazing. Worth every penny. Note. I've found a few videos on YouTube about adding another amp or turning a small metal grille in front of the receiver to improve reception, but everything worked best for me the way it is. In factโ€ฆ

GOES 16 1/24/21 on computer components

This kit works like a charm. There is a downside, but I'll cover that in a moment. Installing the antenna is quite easy. The LMR 400 coaxial cable is large and heavy, but that's not a problem. It just takes patience to get things right. Basic firmware is required to make it work after the antenna is aligned. Additional staining programs are also available. The software is available online and easy to find. Here, too, the antenna alignment program on the Internet is very helpful when aligningโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Stable test results
Cons
  • Basically ok but...

TL;DR: The equipment is good. Easy setup. If you're using an RPi3, don't expect it to run much more as it will throttle due to the power draw (I've tried different RPi3s, happens to all). Pi build time: about an hour. Basically download libraries/compilers/compile Gotools. Link to instructions below. Kit assembly time: 20 minutes. I am building a Raspberry Pi 3 the night before I received the kit. For the most part I followed this guide: https://gist.github.com/lxe/c1756ca659c3b78414149a3ea723eaโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Pleasant little things

I've wanted to copy a geosynchronous GOES satellite for a long time. The assembly of the receiver, amplifier and cable components seemed easy. Finding a dish and changing the channel to work at a frequency of 1700 MHz did not help. I wanted something ready for it. Call me lazy, although antennas usually don't bother me. This kit has everything you need except one part (more on that in a moment) and is quick and easy to put together. You want a stable base that doesn't move and a pole that'sโ€ฆ

Absolutely phenomenal, I have recommended it several times!

Includes everything needed to receive images from GOES-16 and GOES-17. Personally, I aimed the bowl at both and got absolutely incredible pictures. I've taken the entire disk of the earth in different wavelengths and seen photos of California fires, weather reports and put them together into a video of Hurricane Ida hitting Louisiana. Some assembly is required, but there's a link to the manual that came with the device and several third-party guides online to set it up. I ended up hooking it up

Pros
  • Not cheap but decent
Cons
  • Nothing
