Motorcycle Chain/Belt Tension Gauge

I spend a lot of time on motorcycles and would recommend this even to non-technical people. For service work and when the rear is raised, simply check whether the belt/chain is correctly tensioned according to the workshop manual. And knowledge is half the battle.

Pros
  • High marks for grip and durability from testers
Cons
  • Can't remember

Exactly as advertised and works well

I have never bothered to use one of these when reinstalling a rear wheel but I had to. The tool is so inexpensive that there's no point in "tuning" it by approximating a measurement that this tool doesn't accurately make. I'll probably never use it, but if I do I'll be glad I have it.

Pros
  • Nice to use
Cons
  • Cable is shorter than others

Seems accurate and pretty easy to use.

Well made for the price, allows for very easy belt tension adjustment. You'll need almost three hands and four eyes to use them, but that's true of any tensioning tool, as you'll need to be aware of how much the belt is deflecting by the time you hit that 10 pound or weight mark you're aiming for, but this one here The tool does a good job for the price.

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • Useless features

Fixed 10lb mark, no scale

Please note that this meter does not have a graduated voltage scale; just one line for ยฃ10. I may have read that 10 pounds is the standard setting for Harley Davidson bikes, but if you want to use it for something else it's just not accurate because you'll be guessing as you read.

Pros
  • Pretty packaging
Cons
  • The list goes on.

Decent tool in Engine Tools

This is a useful and quite essential tool if you have a belt drive motorcycle and want to do some maintenance yourself. It's pretty easy to use, but may need some customization. The 10 pound mark is hard to see, and while it has an o-ring to help you see it, I imagine the o-ring would slip more easily over time if it doesn't break. However, I recommend it because it gets the job done and pays for itself the first time.

Works best in compression gauges

Purchased to adjust the drive belt for my Harley Davidson Night Rod. This tool is well built, simple, works great and works as intended. For the price you could easily beat it. The OEM HD tool is much more expensive and in my opinion exactly the same. I've only used this tool once so I can't vouch for its durability, but being a very simple and basic tool I don't see why it won't last you unless you abuse it for many years.

Works as advertised

I have always trusted my gut when checking belt deflection but decided to give this tool a try due to the low cost and positive reviews. Seems to work fine, but I haven't tested the accuracy yet. Interestingly, the results with this tool were almost the same as lifting the strap with your finger and about 10 pounds in my opinion. However, going forward I will use this tool as is in my tool box and follow the procedure outlined in the service manual.

Pros
  • Price
Cons
  • Low repairability

OTC is HD Tools' OEM brand and it shows.

I had to laugh when I saw a car that YT was using to tension car timing belts and I had to do some stupid math to figure it out, he had no idea it was a Harley special was tool Davidson. This tool is incredibly easy to use, but two things need to be mentioned to potential DIY buyers. 1.) If your HD does not have a belt guard with a tension scale window, you will need a ruler or tape measure to determine the correct belt deflection for your bike. 2.) Get the correct belt deflection specification

  • Weight
Cons
  • A few little things
