Description of πŸ”¬ Enhanced OTC 5025 Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Refractometer

The refractometer is a portable precision optical instrument used for measuring the diesel exhaust fluid concentration. When a liquid sample is placed on the prism the light passing through it is bent and the more concentrated the liquid the more the light will bend. The refractometer contains a reticle or scale that is enlarged through the eyepiece to measure this light and the values on the scale have been established to evaluate the DEF condition. EPA regulations require all diesel engines manufactured on or after January 1 2010 to meet lowered NOx emissions standards. Most heavy duty engine manufacturers have chosen to utilize SCR including Detroit Diesel DD13 DD15 DD16 Cummins ISX line PACCAR and Volvo-Mack.

I only bought a bad DEF once which I found

I use this every time I get a DEF. The only time I've bought a bad DEF was it found out. Without a tester I could fill my truck with bad DEF. Before purchasing this refractometer, I had a DEF specific gravity tester. It was a lot cheaper, but half the time it was hard to tell which reading it was; it was contradictory. The refractometer is much better and only takes a minute.

Costs money! Excellent diagnostic tool.

I drive a 2014 Ram 3500 that uses DEF. The other day I got an alert and when determining the code said there was a problem with the DEF conductivity (weak DEF in the tank). The service writer said I used cheap DEF (I didn't) and for only $1200 the tank was drained, flushed and refilled with "good" Mopar DEF. Told him he was full of poop and cleared the error code. . I used my new OTC refractometer to check the DEF in the tank and everything was fine. The dealer will now DO YOUR JOB and monitor…

Pros
  • Antifreeze, coolant and diesel exhaust fluid
Cons
  • Big and bulky

What's not to like?

This just WORKS and works well. Thanks to another reviewer who downgraded another refractometer for the Celsius-only temperature scale. Hey, here in the US we're sending a rover to Mars and we still speak Fahrenheit here. There's a message somewhere. After receiving it, I only took it for a test drive. The test report is as follows: A small bottle of deionized water was included in the accessory kit and with that I quickly found that the factory calibration right out of the box was accurate…
