Results vary as much as the birds

I installed this feeder on a pole here in Southern California in April at the start of oriole season and used it for over four months until the last oriole returned to Mexico. I put it on a pole so it wouldn't tip over, started with grape jelly and then moved on to the same mix I use for the hummingbird. A large family of orioles used it regularly and it was a pleasure to look at. I'll post it again next year. Orioles don't do well with plastic feeders, so I need to find a way to fix them.

Pros
  • Drip-free design
Cons
  • Reliability

poor design: Outdoor Décor

Oriole feeders with a narrow neck and convex shape of the container cannot be cleaned. So I looked for an alternative and it looked like it would work. It was easy to clean, but when hung it tilts to one side and liquid spills out. An important judgment came from the birds. Before I put this one up, there were a lot of Orioles using the old one. Nobody will use the new one. It sat unused for 10 days and finally I took it off and put the old one back up. A few minutes later the orioles returned.

Pros
  • Removable lid for easy filling and cleaning

So I modified the end of the half inch diameter rod I already had and installed the feeder on the rod. This solved the tilt problem. Then I let the ants climb the pole and fill the feeder. So I converted the hanging ant screen to a pole mounted ant screen. That took care of the ants. Then, WO, an oriole flew over to me and started feeding on my HUMMINGBIRD feeder. A couple of times he…
