This is a product of the expected high quality that it has always been. However, despite the size, I imagined it would be as big as when I was a child. It's almost miniature. Little more than my wide open hand. Very disappointed he is so small.

My fault for not reading the description more carefully! Don't make the same mistake I did. This ant farm is small! The hole isn't big enough to get the ants in - even after carefully following the instructions - I was bitten hard trying to get the ants into the farm.

My preschoolers enjoyed watching ants every day in connection with our study of insects and bugs. However, the ants never made it through the tunnels - disappointing. But they certainly carried a lot of sand! After all, ants are living things, so their behavior cannot be controlled! The learning experience, however, is for the boys.

It is a good gift for children, but it could be a little more durable. I was afraid to let the kids take off the top and stuff because it looked like the sides would fall apart. Once aunts and sand were in, it was just about ok for the size of the farm. This is a great gift for children over 6 years old, and of course you need to buy the aunts separately. Take a moment to find out their lifespan. How long can they stay on the shelf?

We did a study on ants at school for my preschooler and although I was scared of ants running around my house it was a great addition to our study. Ants can't get out - breathe a sigh of relief! - and seeing how they work was worth it! Like all living things, they die if they are not fed and watered. And ours died. 😕 We will save the farm for my extra 2 kids to use again in kindergarten when they get there!

I bought this for my grandson's birthday on February 7th. Today is May 11th. It took a few weeks to get the ants but there are still about 5-6 alive and working. I give him a piece of fruit (I've used strawberry, mango, and grape slices) when the last is eaten (every 5 days or so) and sprinkle a drop of water in the top slot. I'm surprised. Purchased with the Ants Harvester from Natural History. Smaller than I toured but overall a great education for my 8 year old brother. I live in California so I received my package and ants before the estimated delivery date. It was fairly easy to assemble. However, killing the ants was a nightmare. I have angry RED ants. I followed the chilling instructions to make the ants move more slowly, making it easier to place them in the nest. It did not work! As soon as I opened the cap of the tube, they flew everywhere! My kids had many successful ant farms from Uncle Milton. My 18 year old son asked for this farm to have fun in his youth. We ordered ants from Uncle Milton and brought the package in as soon as it arrived. 50% of the ants were dead on arrival. The rest died within the next week and a half. As a family we have experience with ant farms and have never experienced anything like this. I don't know if it was just a bad batch or if Uncle Milton has lower quality standards than he did a few years ago.
