Review on ๐Ÿ“ป Yaesu FTA550L: High-Performance Handheld VHF Transceiver with Long-Lasting Li-Ion Battery by Jim Roberts

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great value for money - Relatively rugged design - Lots of gadgets and features

As a pilot you know that this type of backup radio will never be able to pick up someone 25 or 30 miles away to contact except for template work or to go to the next tower, it helps! This model is made in Japan and includes NAV/VOR/ILS functionality, but it's hard to imagine you messing around with it as a backup for instrument approaches unless you're in a real emergency. Anyway, this baby has some interesting accessories like 1) included aviation headset/mic adapter, 2) UK and EU power plug adapter, 3) 12v cigarette lighter power cord (with iron magnet to avoid engine interference). ), 4) a 6xAA power adapter for backup in case the Li-ion battery runs out, 5) a charging dock, 6) a power adapter (obviously), 7) a USB cable, and 8) a belt clip (for only serious geniuses). Some important notes for the user: 1) You cannot use AC or 12V adapters to power the radio - they are for charging only. 2) The USB adapter is used to program the radio with software that needs to be downloaded from Yaesu.com. To do this you MUST go to the website, register and then SELECT the OWNER'S CORNER page THEN add your product type to the product list. Then, and only then, will you see downloads, manuals, and materials for your specific model, including FIRMWARE updates. All of this may seem unnecessarily cumbersome, but it works. You will also need to install software and drivers on your WINDOWS PC to interact with the radio. Anyway, if you're advanced enough to wear a 550L on your belt, you might be able to figure out the software! Happy and safe flying - I hope you never have to use it in the air!
