I don't understand why there are so many negative reviews. Yes, Neat offers a cloud scanning service WHICH is NOT REQUIRED to use this scanner! We've been using it for a long time as a standalone scanner connected via Wi-Fi with just a Gmail account. Set up a regular personal IMAP email account as well. Both scan and send to an email address that we've programmed by default, literally with a button on the screen (it doesn't require a great scientist). Scans in excellent quality, BOTH SIDES in one go and immediately emails to the address provided. You can also easily add or replace a destination address in preparation for scanning. The instructions on Neat's website are clear, if not that easy to find (I found them via a search engine searching "set up Neat's scan email"), as of course they put their cloud service first place to try and convince you to use and pay for the service. BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAY FOR ANY SERVICE! Sometimes I think a lot of these negative reviews are competitor products or just idiots who don't know how to operate the scanner they bought. In fact, I think it might just be a bunch of idiots who should ditch their computers and go back to pen and paper. I've supported Fujitsu Snap and other scanners in corporate environments in the past, and NeatConnect is a lot cheaper, just as good for the average office or home office, and a lot easier to set up and use consistently. .
