I used this SATA adapter to install a Western Digital Blue SSD on a Raspberry Pi 4 using one of the USB 3.0 ports on the Pi could boot the Pi with an SSD instead of a micro SD card. There are other things you need to do in the Raspberry Pi software to make this work, but from a hardware perspective, this SATA adapter worked without error. The Pi boots and runs significantly faster with an SSD, making it a viable replacement for a cheap desktop computer. You can only use this adapter for 2.5" drives (the connector will not fit larger drives) and the drive should only use 5 volts (older drives that also require 12 volts will not work).
