As I work at home with a laptop, I really wanted speakers so I could listen to Pandora without headphones. And my Toshiba Satellite laptop, like most laptops, has subpar audio quality. I didn't need anything fancy, I just needed speakers that could produce clear enough sound for me to enjoy my music while I worked. And the Logitech X-140 does more than just the job. Right out of the box, I couldn't help but notice its rather substantial height (roughly 10 inches). But when I'm sitting next to my external monitor, they fit together nicely, so their size isn't an issue. Sonically, I'm incredibly impressed: the instructions suggest setting the speakers on the computer at around 67%, then adjusting the volume using the volume control on the speakers themselves - with the speakers on, my desk next to my monitor, all that on the speaker control is above about 35% is loud. Definitely louder than I would like to hear while working. Over 50% and you'll hear them well beyond the room they're sitting in. Just for testing purposes, I turned the speaker volume up to around 75% to see how they maintain their clarity when playing songs through Pandora. on CNET about buzz and/or volatility and I don't have any of those. Absolutely crystal clear. Miles Davis played and at 75% volume I could hear every note without a hint of buzz, pop, crackle or anything like that. Maybe there are quality control issues which is why some people are getting lemons. This is my only guess because these things sound awesome. To be honest, I can't imagine a better sound for the price. Another nice factor is the tone controls, which allow you to shape the tone a bit. However, the tone formation is not dramatic. You won't be able to boost the bass that much with a tone control, but I think for computer speakers, which tend to leave something to be desired in the bass range, they are more than good in this regard. The additional jack that allows me to connect my iPod directly to the speakers is a very useful feature. There's also a headphone jack, which I wouldn't use as I'd plug my headphones either directly into my laptop or into my iPod, but that might be a welcome addition for some. All in all I am very impressed. I would buy them again or recommend them anytime.
