Works well even with USB 1.0

I'm using an older computer and my old CD burner is broken. I bought it because it is USB 1.0 compatible and also upgradeable. The problem with this product is that the software is pretty weak compared to some of the best programs out there. Otherwise it's a good product at a good price. Someone once told me that any CD burner will fail within 2 years of regular use. So far it looks more or less correct. If you are looking for it in the market, go for an external CD burner and choose one thatโ€ฆ

No problem but short cable

I haven't had any problems with the drive or the software. I'm using Windows 2000 and installed a USB 2 stick, the drive is fast and everything went smoothly. However, it comes with a proprietary USB to ATAPI cable (drive side) that is quite short. Iomega does not sell longer cables and of course recommends against using cables from other manufacturers.

Pros
  • Ideal for a small home
Cons
  • Makes me nervous

Works fine with CD and DVD drives

I've been using Iomega products for seven years now and have never had any issues with their stability on PC and Mac. (Previous versions of Zip drives were a whole different story, if you know what I mean.) The Predator has proven to be a reliable burner with decent speeds - assuming you have USB 2.0, that is. Without USB 2.0, the Predator achieves 4x4x6 speeds, which Iomega believes is a limitation imposed by the slower USB 1.1. I'm not sure if I'll actually get the maximum speed on myโ€ฆ

You can't lose at this price!

Apart from looking great, easy to connect and install, it offers excellent value for money. I've always had internal burners, but I like this one because I don't have to climb into the tower and fiddle with all the connections. Best of all, this machine burns music CDs in record time. No more than 40-60 minutes of waiting for a CD. I burned one in 12 minutes! It's easy to install, but if you're new to CD burning, you might get a little pissed when you print out instructions that aren't easy toโ€ฆ

Finally happy with Iomega

I must admit I was apprehensive when ordering this due to past fiascos with Iomega products. But I took the risk and I'm glad I did. It's great and works on a wide variety of computers. The only real downside (and this is where I'm getting picky) is the size. It's just a little less than half the size of my laptop! Also, I like it and the software suite. Easy and pleasant. I would give 5 stars but nothing is perfect.

  • Looking forward to

Good external CD writer - Works with Win 98

I am using this CD writer with a Pentium II 233MHz PC running Windows 98 (Second Edition). Someone below mentioned that this writer doesn't work with Win 98 - it clearly doesn't. It's smaller and more portable than the previous HP external CD writer I had. My computer does not support USB 2.0; so I get the max write speed of 4X. This means that it takes about 20 minutes to burn a complete CD-R. If I get a newer computer with Win XP I can use the 24x write speed. I had some problems installingโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Confident
Cons
  • Out of fashion

There simply is no connecting link and this drive is no exception. My drive connects and is recognized by the computer, but it doesn't recognize the CDs I put in, no matter what brand the disc is. It also doesn't matter what software you install - it's just a hardware defect, and if you buy one of the cheap Iomega products there's about a 50/50 chance you'll get a defective one. If you're lucky, you might end up with a device that actually works perfectly. Get it from a network admin who hasโ€ฆ
