Review on SunFounder 10.1 Inch Raspberry Pi Touch Screen with 1280X800P Resolution by Michael Pentapati

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Outperforms the "official " Pi display in every way. It's a bit difficult to get started with Volumio.

This is a higher quality, higher resolution display than the official 7-inch display for a little more money. The touchscreen works better too. I find that scrolling is barely used on a 7-inch display, while it's MUCH smoother and more responsive on this one. 10.1 inch display. The fact that this 10.1" display includes a power supply and can also power most Raspberry Pi boards actually makes it a better deal than buying a 7" display and a separate good power supply. The only Pi I had trouble powering this display with was the latest Raspberry Pi 3B+. This board gave me a low voltage indicator in Raspbian. For me it was worth buying a separate Brick for the Pi 3B+ to have this screen. I use it with Raspberry Pi 3B+, HifiBerry DAC+ Pro and Volumio as a desktop FLAC player. This makes Volumio much more user-friendly. I don't think I'll ever go back to the official 7 inch display after using a few of them in projects. Highly recommended. [UPDATE] I'm still using these displays so thought I'd give an update. A few weeks ago I had to use their support team to resolve an issue. I found that one of the displays I originally bought had a dead zone where the touchscreen wouldn't let me click. I contacted Sunfounder support via email and received a response fairly quickly. They gave me troubleshooting steps that confirmed the display was defective. They immediately replaced the display and the swap worked great. Their support has been very good, which is not much I can say about companies that sell over the internet. They really cared if I was happy with their product. Thanks to their excellent support, I actually went to their website to check out their other products. (I like to buy from people who take good care of me after the sale.) I can find out why many teachers use them as a source for STEM gear, project kits, and supplies. Being able to get help when you need it is extremely important when attempting to teach technology in today's crowded classrooms. Anyway, I'm an old-school gadget geek ("ancient philosopher geek") who makes gadgets as a hobby. Looking through their articles I found some interesting components that I plan to use in future projects. As a kid, I wished there were many sets like this. Being a picky old man I can always think of something I could improve about every product I've ever bought, so here are a few things I'd like to see on these displays.1. Instructions for setting up these displays with the most common operating systems on single board computers such as the Raspberry Pi. The documentation page was helpful but I would like a printed page or at least a link to the best guides on the web. Some basic desktop stands. I had to design and 3D print my own stand to use them and not everyone has a 3D printer. Also, I could start my project faster if a stand was included.3. A little more power output for the latest, more powerful single-board computers. I was using the latest Raspberry Pi 3B+ and was getting low power warnings. More current (3A) and slightly higher voltage (5.3V) would have saved me buying a second power supply, making this screen even more valuable. Mention them in case others have different requirements. Bottom line, I still highly recommend these displays, but now I also commend Sunfounder for their customer service. I hope this update helps.

Pros
  • Works with Pi2 but would be nice if it came with a 180 degree adapter for the HDMI port
Cons
  • Definitely a bad product
