Ethereum is basically a blockchain platform that specializes in smart contracts. It has a digital coin known as the ether associated with it. This is the second largest cryptocurrency in the world by value. Like the bitcoin blockchain, Ethereum is also public. Think about how companies like Apple and Google released software developer tools to enable people to build applications on their various platforms. Ethereum does the same thing, allowing people to create "decentralized applications" on their platform, using the blockchain and potentially using digital ether coins to drive their products.
