Zilliqa is designed to provide a scalable and secure platform where developers and institutions can build decentralized applications. One of the major problems for blockchains currently is the problem of scalability or the problem to process more transaction is shorter period of time. Even the biggest networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum face the problem of scalability.
One of the most efficient way to drastically improve the transaction speed is called sharding where processes are run parallelly thereby splitting the processing capacity over the network. Ethereum is already working on sharding to improve the network speed. However, Zilliqa is the only public blockchain that has already been designed with sharding which enables the blockchain to scale in a linear fashion as the network size grows.
Zilliqa operated in a testnet for the most of 2018 but as of 2019, it has launched its own mainnet. The developing team has been continuously active to make improvements on its security and transaction speed. Other than providing a scalability solution, Zilliqa team has also designed a new functional programming language called Scilla which address many security vulnerabilities in existing languages.
