Review on Starrett 505P 7 Miter Saw Protractor by Alfredo Testerman

Beware of COUNTERFEIT!

Revain and other manufacturers seem to have some counterfeits in circulation. I ordered a full set of Revain from a third party but upon closer inspection after receiving the item it turned out to be a counterfeit. I bought a second one that was actually "sold" by Revain and not just "listed" and upon inspection I am confident it is genuine. Please refer to my photos for details. The fake came very close in almost every way. Without the gift next to him, it was difficult to identify. If I had bought it unbranded from a clearance truck I probably wouldn't have had any complaints. It still looked pretty functional. However, I wanted a real tool for this; I just couldn't help but worry that I would end up with less accurate finished bevels and/or more fake finishes. However, the fake I received was pretty accurate. Features: laser engraving. Genuine dial with laser engraving and consistent alignment of markers and numbers. The laser actually "digs" out tiny grooves, with a slight roughness on the edges of each engraved "groove". It feels a bit like sandpaper when you slide your finger over the markings. The fake had some kind of mark printed on it, some numbers were misaligned. The markings were tactile but much smoother than the laser engraving. Less accuracy would be expected with this manufacturing method. Fit and Finish - The Real has a bright yellow insert with precise geometry that sits flush as intended. The fake had a slightly duller, slightly more translucent yellow insert with less precise geometry that didn't sit fully flush as intended. Some structural ribs in the plastic behind the yellow insert are barely visible on the fake due to the translucency of the inserts. Diameter. The fake had a smaller pan head, ø0.60 in (19/32 in) [15.2 mm]. The packet real had a Proposition 65 warning sticker on the back and was not stapled together. The counterfeit was stapled and had no Proposition 65 warning label. The printing on the counterfeit closely matched the genuine article. The fake had several stickers with a barcode on the outside, but the same original barcode remained inside the package. Some details may vary with other fakes. These are just the most notable inconsistencies I found with this particular fake. My review is based solely on the legitimate product I received and not a counterfeit.
