Beware of MEID issues with Sprint

I don't need the latest and greatest phone. When I upgrade, I usually pick a flagship device that's a generation or two later when it becomes affordable enough. I couldn't resist the great price of a new unlocked Pixel 3 in Not Pink without realizing that I've encountered a unique technical issue between the Pixel 3 and Sprint series. In short, be aware that you may have trouble activating this device if you are using Sprint or any other Sprint-based vendor, and let me be clear that this is not the device's (or vendor's) fault. It would be ridiculously inconvenient (especially if you use a Sprint reseller and aren't a genuine Sprint customer) to activate this device, as Sprint likely didn't have the MEID on file and will attack you with a million excuses if you ask for it add to your database. Long version: This Pixel 3 model appears to be the only one of the three series to even activate on Sprint, albeit with complications. I was happily unaware of this carrier oddity until receiving my device which arrived sealed and in perfect condition, went through the prompts to transfer my data, installed my SIM card and excitedly tried to activate it. I kept getting online self-activation errors, and even my carrier's agent (a small pay-as-you-go provider on Sprint's network) couldn't activate it remotely. He suggested that I contact Sprint directly as MEID does not appear to be suitable for activation. I called Sprint and Verizon, the CDMA operators, to see what information I can get about my device. Verizon: no problem with MEID. If I were a customer they would activate it immediately. May I mention very polite, friendly and helpful. On the contrary, phone calls at Sprint caused trouble. The MEID for my device wasn't found in the Sprint database as if the phone never existed but they wouldn't help me add it as technically I'm not a Sprint customer even though my carrier licenses their network. I can't escape the indirect relationship I have with Sprint and the lack of a MEID was 100% their fault. All they had to do was submit a support ticket to add the MEID to their database so I could activate my device after the wait, but they just didn't do it. Without a Sprint account, several tech support staff refused to help me add MEID, although my research showed that Sprint's activation issue (and easy fix) with Pixel 3 phones is clearly a known issue with its own step - by step solution is tech support forum. I was stunned by their inaction. After encountering rude, unhelpful offshore Sprint phone agents, I finally took the device to a physical Sprint store, where I finally found a helpful person who made a few phone calls himself. People on the other side of the phone were still insisting that they couldn't help me without a Sprint account, and just when it seemed like I'd have to erase and send back the data I'd just transferred from that device , he dialed MEID again. Play it safe. And here it is: my MEID magically matched for activation! It means someone somewhere did something despite their repeated denials. After that, I went home and effortlessly activated my device on my carrier with no further issues, as it should have happened from the start. Since then the phone has been running great. I'm sorry for those directly or indirectly stuck with Sprint and loving this phone, but I'm proof it can be done.
