I hesitated about how to rate this item and finally settled on the average score. For me, this product does exactly what I need, but some features just haven't lived up to their potential and may be a barrier to other buyers. I have a laptop that lives on my bed. I watch movies on it when I fall asleep. This is an older and cheaper model so it gets very warm, especially when wrapped in a blanket. I needed something that would lift my laptop from the ceiling and cool it down. This cooling pad does just that. I read other reviews, so I knew that lights and fans are not controlled separately. When the fan is on, the light is on. This feature makes me sad because I had no idea how bright the light would be in a dark bedroom with white walls (see attached image). don't need fans 24/7. I can fall asleep in a room that is not pitch black. Remember - the indicators are pretty bright. I have 2 external hard drives with media on them and my initial plan was to plug them into the 2 USB ports on the back of the laptop. Imagine my surprise when it didn't work at all. I checked the instructions and found that this item uses a lot of USB power. When connected to a laptop, you can use a mouse or keyboard with it (although I haven't tried it either). You definitely can't use an external HD with it. I would be very upset if I didn't have many different USB power sources, so I used a device with a long cable that plugs into the wall and charges 4 USB devices at the same time to power a fan. It works great and I don't have to connect anything to the 2 USB sockets on the laptop panel. Instead, I've hooked my HDs directly to a computer, which can power them fully when the cooling pad isn't connected, stealing all the power. I definitely recommend using an external power source, which is pretty easy to find since almost every phone charger now has a USB input. The only downside is that the cable isn't very long, so you'll need either a USB extension cable or a long-cord charger. Or you need to keep this device very close to an electrical outlet. As far as the function of the device is concerned, it works great. The fans are powerful enough to keep my laptop nice and cool, and if I turn them on during the day, I can turn them off at night if blue light bothers me. Setup was easy, the size is perfect, and the little feet that prevent the laptop from sliding off are strong enough to walk on my not-so-thin, not-so-light laptop. I also like that the height is adjustable, although once I found the right angle I didn't change it. My laptop (and blanket) no longer feel hot, which was a big issue prior to purchasing this item. If you don't need USB ports and don't care about lights, this article is just great. Otherwise it can be very disappointing.
