I have one of these types for mapping at work and one for general purposes at home. They are made of stainless steel and are therefore very durable. They pick up micro-scratches easily, but the markings are still clear and easy to read. But boy, those edges are sharp. I'm pretty sure this is preferred for engineering purposes, so it's more of a warning to non-engineers. They come with plastic trays and I suggest using them when I put them in my bag as there's a good chance they'll get ripped. lining in your pocket. I actually ripped part of the plastic sleeve that came with it!
