The heating plate was a little slow getting started but using it three days in a row seemed to help. It is tall for a T V dinner, but I found, putting a stack of paper towel on top of the dinner expedited the heating process. I'm nit sure if it uses less electricity than a microwave, but for those that don't want to use one this could work. It will not bake or brown, but you can have a hot lunch, dinner or whatever. I would nit recommend this for keeping a sandwich warm. But you could plug it in 30 minutes before you want to eat.
