Strong smell: clothes and closet storage

Bought to help my daughter go to college. They are light, feel strong and arrived quickly. I'm hesitant to carry their clothes package in them because they smell strongly of plastic or vinyl. I opened them all up, sprayed them with Lysol and left them open on the outside, but to no avail. Then I will try to wipe it down with vinegar and hot water and let it air out in the garden. Hope it works!
