Plastic hook with metal door bracket. They snap in the outboard position and feel pretty well built. The piece of metal that goes over the door is fairly thin but strong, fits standard door sizes and is thin enough for you to close the door. The plastic bracket is quite strong but can be problematic as it's too heavy. maybe more than 15-20 pounds? I like that the hook mechanism is quite high and flush with the height of the door as I use it to hang heavy materials to create a sort of artificial draft barrier for slightly open doors to a cold basement. This is an easy and inexpensive way to let my cats in and out without installing a cat door. Haha! Good price for a three pack.
