Apparently HP has some kind of proprietary RF ID chip / chip and without this chip it is impossible to use the cartridge. Therefore, all aftermarket cartridge manufacturers that offer cartridges for this printer require you to remove the HP chip and reinsert it into the cartridge. It only takes a few minutes and the necessary tools are included so it's not too difficult. The problem is that HP has software that counts the number of pages printed by this chip, so it always thinks you're out of toner. Therefore, you get endless warnings every time you try to print, which is annoying. If you can live with that, it seems to work fine. If not, you'll have to choose between a new printer or lifetime refills of expensive cartridges.
