just received. The mat is double-sided (grey on one side, white on the other) with measuring lines on both sides. The rotary cutter did a great job with thin suede detailing. There are no marks on the cutting mat. I hope that later I can replace the blade with one made of titanium. I think that applying too much pressure to the cutter can speed up the damage to the mat, so I only use a sharp blade. The ruler is great. Measuring and cutting fabric has been the most tedious part of my sewing projects, but this cutting kit takes the edge off! Thank you Fiskars. Robust, well thought-out cutting set. Update September 2, 2017: I just used a very thick leather cutting kit with layers of suede (from an old leather wallet that I recycle). I had to run the blade over the material several times, but no problem. Update January 21, 2018: Used a kit to separate the pages of a thick book so the book can be combed. Worked great! I thought I might damage the blade because the book is so thick and I had to cut through the spine, but no problem! The carpet was irreplaceable.
