The scratching pole can eventually be replaced if needed, without needing to remove the wood mounting from the walls. I set mine up horizontally and although my cats seemed reluctant, they eventually learned to love it. Just a tip, if you are mounting any portion of this on just drywall, I’d purchase 35/46/59mm Heavy Duty Zinc Plated Steel Long Molly Bolt Drive Fasteners Hollow Wall Drive Anchor Screws Assortment Kit for Drywalls Hanging Walls Paneling or Ceilings. Because the kit this item comes with, didn’t quite work for me. It worked perfectly on the stud, but the drywall needed a better hold. The special nails I bought fit the pre drilled holes in the scratching post wood mounting. And once screwed in properly, is extremely strong. Plus, if you’re renting, the screw can be removed while the nail base is puttied over.I’m extremely pleased with this purchase.
