The butter dish is made of glazed ceramic and has a small handle at the top. If the handle breaks, you can still easily remove the lid from the plate by holding the sides; the glazing is not too slippery to prevent this. The lid is unusually tall, at least 50% taller than it should be to accommodate even the West Coast "short" buttersticks, which are thicker and taller, though shorter, than the Elgin buttersticks commonly found on the East Coast and the US are found in the Midwest. The bowl is long enough to hold Elgin Butter Sticks and the lid is high enough to hold two Elgin Butter Sticks stacked on top of each other. However, it is not high enough to do this with West Coast buttersticks. The one I received is a light blue color called 'Sky' but I have to say the color looks cleaner and 'bluer' in the product photos than what I actually received which looks as the glaze would have a light shade. green in it mixed with light blue. I was tired of making delicious dinners, but I didn't have anything better than an old plastic Tupperware bowl to serve my butter with, so I bought this. My second choice would be a clear glass or crystal butter dish, but I read somewhere that butter can go rancid when exposed to light, so it will last longer if kept in an opaque container. Holiday family dinner, the extra tall lid of this oiler holds two packets of butter I believe: 1. Take the lid of the oiler and flip it between a couple of 2x4 pieces to support the lid on either side of the handle.2 . Unwrap the two butter sticks but save the wrappers, you will need them in step 4.3. Place a piece of wax paper over the mouth of the inverted oil can and place the first strip of oil on the piece of wax paper centered over the lid. This piece of wax paper should be about the same length as the cover and about 12 inches wide. Contact with oil, face down (oil contact). Remove the buttered wrapping paper, place a second stick of butter on top of the first, and replace the wrapping paper. Cover, using the edge of a piece of wood, press down an additional 3/8 to 1/2 inch as evenly as possible. a piece of wax paper.8. Peel off the wrapping paper and, holding the raised edges of the wax paper, lift the b-block out of the lid and place it wide side down (the side you pressed down) on the bottom of the oiler. Do not peel off the wax paper yet. Try putting a lid on. When the cap is firmly on the base and out of contact with oil, remove the wax paper and put the cap back on. You're done and you now have a full 1/2 pound of butter in your butter dish that's the same temperature for your dinner guests to spread on rolls, toast, or baked potatoes.
