Unsupported buggy firmware causing data loss

Short version: Didn't work right out of the box, resulting in messing up the data on the installed drive. If you are not tech savvy or need to recover/migrate data from an existing drive, look elsewhere. Long version: (This is for a USB3 NVMe case) Installed a 500GB Samsung 970 EVO Plus, which is explicitly listed as supported. Windows incorrectly reported the drive as a 16TB partition and no data was available. Wavlink doesn't even list this product on their homepage and there is no driver/firmware support. Fences. I took a chance and tried updating the firmware based on instructions found in a random forum post. Surprisingly it worked, and after updating to version 0209 the hard drive is recognized correctly and seems to be working. Unfortunately, the firmware update process also formatted the drive, causing me to lose all data stored on it. PERHAPS you could perform a firmware update on an empty enclosure and then use the updated enclosure to recover data from the drive you just inserted, but honestly I suggest you look for another product that works out of the box. That aside, the design seems solid enough that if the device came with updated firmware (or even properly supported Wavlink) I could be pretty happy with it. My only concern regarding the hardware is that the included heatsink is held in place with plastic pins, which can wear out and break with repeated attachment and detachment. So keep this in mind if you switch drives frequently. Luckily, the heatsink doesn't serve any structural function, and you could probably keep it if you're doing a quick disk clone and only install it for long-term use.

Pros
  • Fingers crossed
Cons
  • Upgradable
