The material is VERY thin. Not what you would expect from a short board although I believe it can dry much faster. I am returning mine as they came with white material on the front and back and smell VERY like perfume. This leads me to believe someone else has worn them for more than trying on, although the tags are still attached. They didn't look exactly like the photo either, but close enough that it didn't matter. They have an elastic band on the back half of the waistband. I tried them on over leggings (because we wanted to know how they fit if I just wash them and don't return them). Mine are very loose in the leg and slightly loose in the back. The cut is more reminiscent of board shorts for men, where the leg is straight instead of tapered. If you're looking for something slimmer but not too tight, then these shorts aren't for you. The shorts also hit me mid-knee when I pull them up like a high-waist panty. If I hadn't pulled them up so far, it would look like I had a full sagging diaper, like in my men's pajama shorts that I stole from my husband. (Lol) That's another reason I think they're more suited to men. I'm 5ft 7in, 250lbs and built like a pear. Literally. Take a pear and hit it with your head, hands and feet. . This is me.
