Review on Portable Stainless Steel Charcoal Grill for 12 Skewers - Ideal for Camping, Picnics, and Outdoor Cooking by Carmen Peterson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good for grilling

This grill is great for grilling. The cutouts at the top are cut perfectly for Russian-style skewers, which are flatter and wider than the regular skewers used here in the States. Wider skewers rotate in the notches so you don't have to lift the skewer out of the notches to turn, making cooking with this appliance very convenient. There are also two height tiers to set your skewers on so you can adjust for hotter/colder areas. I also like how it folds into a suitcase for storage. Only 2 issues are holding this back from 5 stars. Firstly, I wish it was a few inches taller to fit on my skewers as I had to leave a lot of room on the skewer for the meat to fit in the firebox. Second, I didn't like the metal finish. The unit had a strange oily odor when unpacked and did not smell of cooking oil; maybe that was it, it just smelled more like industry than food. On the first day I lit a fire to burn the production oil. The second day I cooked (very fun with this device) and then let the coals cool overnight. On the third day I already had rust spots. Therefore, my advice is: first set fire to a box without food, clean it after cooling, and then immediately rub it with vegetable oil. Will probably have to oil the unit every time I use it to prevent rust.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • A questionable purchase for the elderly
