By all accounts this machine is short lived. I have to agree that they all seem to fail after about 14 months, right after the warranty expired. Having previous experience in construction and HVAC in particular, I decided to take this unit apart and find out what happened. Here is my experience and how we extended the life of this unit. After about 14 months of use, the device started to freeze. This is usually due to dirty filters or a low battery. Since we had it in the server room, the problem isn't a clogged filter. So we disassembled the device to find the problem. After the hull was removed, we made the following observations and changes. 1 - The device is a sealed device. You would think that this would prevent the r410a from leaking, but these devices are either very low charged or have a small amount of leakage. Since the device froze, we added about 4 ounces of charge (which is a lot considering it takes a total of 18 ounces) and the freezing problem was solved. Unfortunately there is no filling valve as it is a closed system. We had to touch the low pressure side to add charge. Be sure to use round valves only on the 3/8" low-pressure side. Touching the high-pressure line (1/4") will cause pressure leaks. Evaporative system. Unfortunately, the pan with the water is in direct contact with the coils and will cause rust and corrosion. If I buy another one of these I will most likely take it apart and seal the area along the edge of the tray to prevent the metal coil from corroding. If you could use a drain that would be much better. 3 - Bonus Tip: The device is more likely to freeze at low fan speeds, this is contrary to what most people would assume, stop the fan.
