This has a thick outer shell material that certainly implies good waterproofing. It is much stiffer than a puffer type coat and almost a bit waxy feeling. After an afternoon rolling in the wet leaves/grass, there was no wetness on the under shirt or noticeable on the inner sleeves. The pockets are nice sized and plentiful. The buttons and snaps don't pose an issue for little hands. The hood reaches all the way over the head.It does have a slight scent of fresh material out of the bag so I let it air overnight in the garage and it is not noticeable now.
