The smart extension is a great idea. I walk around the house looking for appliances that draw power when not in use and check to see if they're turned off when they should be. This APC Power worked for the first time on my Dell computer. It has no adjustments at all, unlike the Smart Strip Smart Strip SCG3 Energy Saving Power Strip with Auto Switching Technology which I first bought and returned disappointed. This device has a small adjustment screw that I had to fiddle with a lot but still didn't get good results. The APC device just started up when I plugged it in. A note: APC says that anything that draws more than 15W while in sleep mode (sleep or hibernate) won't turn off the device. On some computers, this may mean putting the computer to sleep to allow the strip to shut down gracefully. Sleep mode is better anyway as it uses less power when idle.
