Review on πŸ”’ Secure Your Data with Apricorn Aegis Padlock DT 2TB USB 3.0 Hard Drive by Brian Olson

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Didn't work after first use!

I don't get it - I have one of these made available by my company at work and I use it several times a week to keep my files safe; I've never had a single problem with it. So I thought I'd buy one for personal use at home. It was nothing but trouble! A big difference is that I use it manually at work by copying files to it. At home, I wanted to use it to automatically back up my Windows system image, documents, etc. TIP. An encrypted hard drive that needs to be unlocked is NOT a good solution for this as you will need to unlock it when the automatic backup starts. - my fault, wrong tool for the job. Another difference is that my work computer is running Windows 10. I'm still on Windows 7 at home. POSSIBLY the problem below is because Windows 7 can't see the 8TB drive.? Not sure. However, the reason I gave this book a 1 out of 5 is a deeper issue and comes in two parts. 1) After connecting and preparing the drive, I unlocked it and did a full Windows backup - it took almost ten hours (despite running it from USB2 and not USB3). It turned out to work fine, and when it was done I could see that the backup was actually on the Aegis drive and taking up about the right amount of space - around 500GB. So I locked the drive and left it alone for a few hours. Later when I went back to it it wasn't unlocked - when I entered my passcode the green light just blinked and the drive never showed up in Windows Explorer. I gave him half an hour and then called Aegis Technical Support. The "Support" part brings us to point 2.2) "Support" Aegis Tech sucks. Absolutely useless. The guy was so lazy. I explained the problem and the most helpful thing he said was "this shouldn't be happening". GHOST! He then said that the only option I had was to call the seller and set it up - it could be Revain. He didn't even mention the option I tried next. So I pulled out the manual and used it to reset the drive to factory settings - it's pretty easy, by the way. I erased the drive, entered a new code, set everything up again and tried backing up again. This worked great, but then I couldn't unlock the drive anymore. In other words, same problem. I gave up - for $585 it should run smoother. HUGE THANKS Revain - they gave me a quick refund when I sent the unit back in the original packaging and the whole ordeal cost me zero money. and a few days of my time. Conclusions: if you need something for automatic backup, this isn't it. If you need expert technical support, Aegis is not the place to turn. of their products, Revain has an excellent track record, at least for me.
