We use one of these on a toddler's bedroom door to prevent escape at night and while sleeping. We hung him outside the door so we could check him as soon as he (allegedly) went to bed. At the moment he can only open the door by pulling the handle down, so it's very convenient for us to keep the movement available (so as not to accidentally lock us in his room, for example). This was the main reason we chose this model over another model that blocked both up and down rotation at the same time. We have to be more careful once he can turn the handle up to open the door. Presumably one could put this on the inside of the door as a toddler probably won't have the dexterity to open it, although it may prevent you from walking quietly and I can't guarantee it will stay in place if Your toddler decides to dangle from him. They are very easy to assemble and hold up very well. I can't comment on how clean they come off as we didn't have to remove them.
