I'm probably spoiled because I'm used to another brand, but I don't think it puts out enough negative ions to be effective. Other brands have small fans inside to speed up ionization. This one is quiet, but its efficiency is probably under 5% of other brands. I haven't noticed any reduction in odor and have to hold my nose to it exactly 3 inches or less to see ionization.
