I didn't have other locking wires (and haven't tried welding wires) so can't compare them but these worked great for me. They give a very nice straight line to the scarves I've made. The gifts I blocked with these pins look much prettier and more professional than regular pins. They come with T-pins, but I really only use sewing needles to hold the wires in place when I want to stretch the lock a bit. They "ring" a bit in my hands when I use them which means they aren't very high quality steel, they definitely feel cheaper than metal but I didn't get any rust at all using them. I really like the little plastic bag with handles that they came in - quite thick plastic and easy to store in my knitting closet so they don't get lost in my stash!
