Review on Goal Zero Boulder Monocrystalline Solar by John Stefko

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Works well, easy to connect and solidly built

I've just used two of these briefcases (2 x 100w) on Burning Man and they've worked great. I put them on the trailer and didn't even face the morning and evening sun. They put out about 150 watts (combined) during the day, which was almost perfect for the Yeti 1400 battery that I also bought, coupled with the fact that I connected the Yeti battery while the trailer generator was on. I might add a third block in the future but so far two have been fine. Although I attached them to the trailer roof, they are quite heavy and I wasn't overly concerned about wind issues. However, given their weight, I really wouldn't want a single 200W unit. More specifically about 2 x 100w vs 1 x 200w. I'm very glad I bought two 100w portfolio units instead of one 200w unit. The two units fit perfectly on the Frontrunner Outfitters shelf in the back of my Jeep Wrangler. I simply put a towel between the bottom block and the shelf and then a towel between the first block and the second block and then tied them together with two flat 48 inch bungee cords. The towels were probably overkill, but since the solar panels are facing outward (exposed) when the briefcase is closed, I wanted to play it safe. Additionally, the towels helped keep the devices from sliding around the shelf. The size was perfect too, so that I left of the both panels on the shelf had space to put the battery inside. Perfect fit. Aside from the fact that a single 200w unit is probably too big for my purposes, these units are not lightweight and I would not want to lug a 200w unit onto the roof of my caravan. Panel pairing: You can't connect one set of panels to another set and then to the battery. I connected two sets of panels to a Goal Zero 4x 8mm coupler with an Anderson adapter and then ran an Anderson power line to the trailer.
