Before I got this chopper I was using a cheaper model I bought years ago. Lately my old grinder has been overheating a lot and I decided I needed a new one. So I took a chance and went for this GBC shredder. The good things first: Real document shredding works great! I had a lot to shred as my old shredder wouldn't cut and "ShredMaster" did all my shredding in no time. I can put a "spam" letter in this machine, envelope and all, and it will be destroyed with no problem. The shredder is bigger than my old one with a larger bin and I appreciate that too. Now it's not so good: with my old paper shredder, I plugged it in, turned it on "automatic" mode, and it silently waits for me to put in more paper. I often go days or weeks without a shredder and with my old grinder it didn't seem to matter. It destroyed as soon as I placed the paper. this is "ShredMaster" by GBC. I plugged it in, flipped the power button and got a flashing green arrow. The manual says to hold down the "ON" button for 3 seconds. I did that but I still have a blinking green arrow and nothing broke. I turned the device off and on again, pressed the "ON" button for 3 seconds and this time the flashing arrow turned solid green and I was able to destroy. As I said above, the shredder worked great and shredded my small stack of paper with no problem. When I was done I left it as usual for a day or so. Then I moved on and got a blinking green arrow again. I pressed the "ON" button for 3 seconds and nothing. So I had to flip the power button again and then turn it back on. I actually had to do this a couple of times before I got a solid green light indicating it was ready to grind. Does that mean I have to turn off the power every time I'm done sanding? It's annoying. Another thing I'm not very happy with is that this device doesn't seem to shred credit cards. He shreds staples and paper clips, but no credit cards? It just doesn't make any sense to me. An $80 device was designed to destroy credit cards. In fact, other brands in this price range not only destroy credit cards, but DVDs too! This one does neither. So this combined with the shaky power in question makes this shredder a 3 star unit.
