I live in Phoenix and travel across small rocks and shales - I've had Patagonia and La Sportiva (Raptor). This is the best hiking shoe ever. The Raptor is trail running and you can feel the rock beneath you through the sole of the shoe. It's not so much a runner - but you can walk in it. The sole is firm, like my previous Patagonia, but much lighter and more comfortable. Rock Grip is the best I've ever had. If you want a true trail runner—which is all you need to do on dirt or a tough pack—the Raptor is probably for you. If you want to do a bit of walking while hiking and run into rocky trails and loose stuff - THIS IS THE SHOE!
