Twist back to open, place on jar, twist forward to close and continue twisting forward until lid is completely cut open, twist back to close To release, lift it up and the lid will go with you. I was afraid that the rubber lid we use to seal the partially used jar would not fit once the rim was removed. It just fits perfectly and is even easier to put back on. It's absolutely worth every penny. It is very easy to use, leaves no sharp edges and makes it easier to get the dog food out of the can because there is no longer a annoying sponge to get stuck. If this thing doesn't wear out next year (I don't expect it) I'll be thrilled and would recommend it to anyone who asks.
