I have had two or three of these particular meat thermometers over the last 15 or 20 years and have always been pleased with their performance, durability and reliability. got this. I was very disappointed to find that the probe wire is now coated in plastic or rubber instead of the braided wire that all previous devices had. I've read that this wire tends to melt at higher temperatures. . This happened to me the first time I put it in the oven and closed the door. In addition, the manufacturer has made the wires so thin and brittle within the coating that they break under normal flexing from fatigue. The metal probe itself is also of much lower quality. Taylor made the metal of the probe in this item of such poor quality that the metal probe bent the first time it was used when the probe was inserted into the roast. I've never had issues with wire damage from heat or probe bending on a braided metal surface, but with this new device that's no longer the case so I've given this product two stars.
