Revainrating 3 out of 5

Suitable for some general purpose items, but. . .

I've been doing radio and electronics for over 60 years, both professionally and as a hobby (I almost always open the rating of this comment as a guide). I've used MANY banana plugs over the years and have a clear idea of what I like and don't like about them. I only wish I could find the "classic" banana plugs I bought years ago. Anyway, here are my likes and dislikes on this particular one. HOW: 1. Fairly easy to tighten the cable IF the cable is big enough for the screw to "bite". It makes sense to first tin the wire with a soldering iron.2. I like plastic insulators. I bought some "$$$" gold banana plugs but they are not very safe for test equipment etc that have high voltage on the wires. For connecting power supplies etc. they are safer (although they do note the downsides for power). The price is very reasonable, especially when you buy enough "things" from Revain to get free shipping. Dislikes (Cons): 1. I have several items on my workbench with "short" panel mount banana plugs as well as "wrist" ground pins. These plugs will NOT fit this type of banana plugs, they will dangle and fall out (the thick gripping part of the plug is too far back).2. I mentioned connecting to a power source. I'm not at all sure if this is a safe or reliable connection for anything that draws a lot of power (e.g. through an amplifier). I say that because I connected a pair of test leads with these connectors to one of my (bench) digital voltmeters, set the digital voltmeter to the low resistance range and measured the resistance across it. When I jigged the connector, the resistance changed from a fraction of an ohm to a few ohms (probably the "part that turns" to the resistance of the center shaft). I suspect that for power connections (e.g. to power even a modest ham radio) the voltage drop (and possibly the heat generated) would be unacceptable. Result. Probably very good for something like connecting speakers etc, but don't count on it in your home lab or ham shack. . .
