Although they have a cute design and ear loops to keep them in place, they fit really snugly around baby's face. I was expecting at least some protection when I bought them for my kids at school, but you can see through them and feel your every breath, so I don't expect them to offer much protection given the model, even from dust. They work better as a headband as they stretch and fit snugly. It's definitely not a protective coating.
